Societies, Cultures and Modern Languages Department

Each year, this department welcomes over 2,500 students. Its main objective is to offer teaching and research in Applied Foreign Languages (LEA) as well as in Regional and Foreign Civilizations, Literatures and Languages (LLCER). Nearly 170 teachers and lecturers and about 20 administrative staff members are on site to help students as they prepare a standard degree course or continuing education program.

The diversity of the courses on offer in 8 languages (Arabic, Chinese, English, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian and Spanish) - and the wide range of professionally-oriented tracks will enable you to start a new language or master languages in which you already have some proficiency. At the same time, you will develop the methodological skills and acquire the cultural and cross-cultural knowledge required in a variety of professions related to teaching, heritage, tourism, translation, international business negotiation or international development.

Moreover, the Department of Societies, Cultures and Modern Languages gives many opportunities to study abroad in the UGA’s partner universities as part of the Erasmus+ program and other specific partnerships.
Research activities conducted by the Institute of European, American, African, Asian and Australian Languages and Cultures (ILCEA4), which is linked to the Department of Societies, Cultures and Modern Languages, will help you to become familiar with research in the languages, literatures, civilizations and arts of very diverse cultures.
During your degree, you will have access to over 30,000 extremely useful resources in the department’s library which will be both your workspace and documentary research center.
